Piston rings are made up of materials suiting the application:
- High grade cast iron alloy
Most of the piston rings are made of this grey cast iron material.
- Spheroidal graphite iron (S.G. iron)
Top groove rings are mostly made of S. G. iron which is ductile in nature and has higher modulus of elasticity.
- Special alloy steel
Top groove rings of some high technology engines are made of special alloy steel with high modulus of elasticity.
- Sintered material
Piston rings for hydraulic applications are many times made of sintered material for improved wear resistance and anti-friction properties esp. in dry condition.
- Other special materials
Piston rings can me made of other special materials also to suit the special application conditions.
